Welcome to the Reading Rainforest!

A space that dazzles the imagination, this room is a unique island in Plainfield:  an environment that has burst forth from books of faraway lands; a room that reflects family roots in tropical countries; a reminder that there are animals and trees to be saved; a room where technology is integral and familiar.  This room is a haven from the pressures of school and family, where individuals, friends, families, and classes visit for quiet excitement and learning.  It is a world of wonder that is just for the children of Plainfield.  And it’s here inside the Plainfield Public Library.

Main Entry

Visitors can't miss the amazing
hand-painted palm tree sign and massive wooden doors that provide an impressive portal into the new space.

Story Tree Area

With a hand painted mural as a background, the Story Tree Area serves as a place for storytimes, class visits, puppet shows and feature films.

Projection Screen

A projection screen magically drops down from the tree for youngsters to watch scheduled movies on Thursday afternoons. A smaller LED screen is located in the trunk of the tree for
small groups.

Puppet Stage

The tree becomes a puppet stage, where children can enjoy their favorite stories.

The Early Literacy Stations

Parents and pre-school children share fun and learning on three touch-screen computers that feature over 50 colorful educational software programs.

Tween Tent

Very Cool! A place that middle graders can call their own. The tent houses popular teen books and magazines.

Reading Huts

Parents and children enjoy the comfortable chairs and quiet space of the reading huts overlooking the library's reflecting pool.

Generations of children remember the "story pit." Today it is a faux lily pond, spanned by a rope bridge. It continues to be an appealing seating area.

The Computer Center

Your library card is your passport to adventure and learning with seven internet and four word-processing computers. Computers can be used for enjoyment, personal learning, or for classroom assignments.

Folk Art Masks

Masks from all over the world
introduce the color and mystery of world cultures.
